Sometimes it feels like my job is essentially catering to free loaders. I’m supposed to ignore the actuality that a person is an asshole just to force a smile and feel privileged that they give me money in return. I actually could care less if a person doesn’t or can’t tip, honestly, it doesn’t hinder my thoughts on a person for that. What does bother me is people who justify spending a lot of money at your place of work then having the feeling that they can essentially just do whatever they please. Cause as long as they tip you enough you’ll put up with it. I don’t care how much money a person has, that’s low class.

What is it about bars that brings out the worst in people? Alcohol removed, that’s not the point i’m making. I can not have a drink of any kind at work all night and it can still bring out the deficient side of me. I picture my job as practice improv for people. Acting a role and looking to be personified in certain ways while we’re forced to say “Yes”, “Please”, and “Thank You” like some kind of reward in a Pavlov experiment gone awry.

I have a Friday night off tonight. Better start getting into character.

Nothing can make a better Saturday afternoon than fucking up a station burger with the love of my life. Boca station for myself now a days of course, but in no way hinders the complete annihilation which ensues. Plus fries and blueberry green tea. Anyways, this brought me to the following introspection: If we were to create a top five list of Grand Rapids eateries of our own, what would they be?

SUSHI YAMA
Basement of the McKay Tower at Rosa Parks Circle

This easily is the best sushi in Grand Rapids for the both of us. It’s difficult to try to persuade people on new sushi places, i’m not sure when it became such a contentious food, but it can be a pretentious high point for people I guess. Maybe this makes me the same way? Seriously though, this the best in town. Get the kimchi as a roll and thank me later. Another good secret, if you tip well from time to time you get free rolls, edamame, and japanese hard candies hidden in your orders.

MARIE CATRIB’S

Even before I started attempting the venture into the world of being a pescetarian I feel in love with Marie Catrib’s. At first I was disappointed when I heard that they were going to be building a restaurant on the East Hills Center of the Universe Garden, but they did exactly what East Hills needed. Everything is made fresh in house from the bread to baked goods. All the meat is grass fred local and free range, and it’s without a doubt the best vegan selection in town.

I don’t know that there’s any other hashery in Grand Rapids that you absolutely could say they could exist off of just one menu item. Station burgers, (beef or boca!) are mouth watering in every sense of the phrase, and i’ve literally woken up craving one on many occasions. They have a wider selection, full of a medley of foods, and I’ve always had other rave about their Polish selections. In the end though, every time i’ve ever even contemplated about experimenting with anything new I still can’t get anything besides the obvious.

CHERRY DELI

75 of the most delectable sandwiches in all the world. Everything about Cherry Deli is actually pretty mere and modest. My major buy in with them is the way all the sandwiches are overloaded with veggies, even on the more meat based ones. Perfect soups and salads as well. I do wish they would focus more on local based meats and cheeses, they do use fairly prominent brands as far as freshness goes. They actually have an AMAZING egg salad sandwich i’m willing to bet gets neglected in peoples selection choices sometimes. It’s one of my go to quick decisions.

BELTLINE BAR
16 28th Street SE | Grand Rapids, MI

There is absolutely nothing organic, fresh, or hip about Beltline Bar. It’s just fucking awesome. Everything is cheesy, large portioned, and guaranteed to have you sleeping on your couch within the hour. They also love tequila and supply an assembly line of margarita’s, which is good for all of us. For the most part, it’s as close as chain restaurant as we get, except for RED LOBSTER of course, which is another whole post all in itself.

I’m willing to bet anyone that is actually going to read this has probably already been to all these places, hereby wasting the last 30 minutes of my life. Oh well.

For being possibly the shortest song lyrically i’ve ever written, it has taken me over 14 months to perfectly finish Blank States fifth song. It’s the final set of a trilogy that goes back to the last two Wormburner songs. Also known as the jam, and soon to be known by some kind of witty fun name. Here’s 14 months worth of lyrics:

Tornado Longing For Freedom

Last night we officially put an end to the last hanging thread of 2011 in the Nunn/Walker household with the debauchery carousel known as the Hopcat Christmas Party. Bonus for this year of course was that it had become the Hopcat / Stella’s / Viceroy / McFadden’s Christmas Party. Let’s put an emphasis on that McFadden’s part. Emilie and myself donned some of our sexier attire for evening, for myself a nice grey/white shirt with grey tie combo, Emilie in a black and white jumper with tights. The best way to sum up the first three hours of the night is that while minding my own business, I was approached by an aficionado of the faux hawk movement who wished to fist bump me at the mere sight of a free taco bar. Another logical part of the night was the exclusion of shots from being allowed, which left people with the best second option of slamming pints of IPA’s as shots, followed by missed high fives and “Woooooooooooooooooooooo!”s.

We ditched that shit eventually and ended up at Pub 43, what I believe to be the best of gay bars in Grand Rapids. Also home to $3 baskets of mozzarella sticks, the invention of the “pink taco” shot, and free shuffle board. It essentially ejaculates class. This is also when the party really got going, mostly because literally not one person from McFadden’s could understand why people would go to a gay bar. This is also when people actually started having fun. There were beers and shot consumed for sure, and finally, smiles.

We cabbed it to an after party where I drank vodka mixed with wine for some reason, and Emilie spent more time dancing with cats then even talking to anyone else. It ended up being a pretty bitchin’ night all in all.

Change Is All The Rage

My dexterity in life can hinder my motivation on a day to day basis, more of just subtle inert movements that more or less have mostly to do with changing channels back and forth between NFL games on Sundays. Like hell i’ll apologize though, I may get a genuine lounge day once every other week so I like take advantage of those days when possible. I’ll attest that it’s another notch on the turning thirty belt, right along with waking up at 10am to pee every morning and brussel sprouts suddenly tasting good.

Last night Famous Amos himself turned me on to a hunker of a little place tucked next to the highway and secluded from all the mannerless twenty somethings pensions for obsessive loud talking and playing the same Ratatat songs over and over. This place had $3 twenty four ounce Coors Light drafts, sports on t.v., free foosball, seating for like 30 people, and a fried everything bar menu. You know what I call that? FUCKING SOLD.
